About Punta Gorda, Florida

The first thing you need to know about Punta Gorda, Florida is how to pronounce it. At least until more and more northerners move down and change it.

Forget your Spanish, native Floridians call it PUNTA (like punting a football). Don't say POONTA (although as Florida's influx of new people continues, this becomes less important).

Punta Gorda has a population of about 17,000 and is the seat of Charlotte County, Florida. It is the only incorporated town in the County.

The town gets its name from the Spanish term for the "fat point" of land where the Peace River meets Charlotte Harbor.

HISTORY OF PUNTA GORDA, FLORIDA

In the years after the Civil War, the Howard brothers came to the area and were the first settlers. About ten years later the railroad came to town, and Punta Gorda FL began to grow.

The town was at the end of the railway system, so a lot of tourists came down and stayed awhile. The town was incorporated in 1887.
