Mary Esther, Florida is a city located in Okaloosa County in the Florida Panhandle along the Gulf Coast. Situated between Fort Walton Beach and Navarre, the city is part of the Crestview–Fort Walton Beach–Destin metropolitan area. The community's early history dates to the 19th century, when settlers established homes and farms near Santa Rosa Sound. Mary Esther was incorporated as a city in 1946 and takes its name from Esther and Mary Christine Newton, the daughters of John Newton, an early postmaster in the community.
