About Milton, FL

Milton is the county seat of Santa Rosa County, set along the Blackwater River near where it opens into Blackwater Bay in the Florida Panhandle. Settled in the early 1800s as a lumber village and incorporated in 1844, the city grew from a riverfront mill town into the center of county government. Its historic downtown, the Imogene Theatre, the West Florida Railroad Museum and the Blackwater Heritage State Trail all sit close to the river. Nearby communities include Pace, Bagdad, East Milton, Point Baker, Chumuckla and Allentown, with Navarre to the south.

Milton's riverfront location means storms here bring both wind and water. Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Hurricane Sally in 2020 both left Santa Rosa County with damaged roofs, flooded homes and lengthy insurance claims. Today Milton's mix of historic downtown buildings, older homes near the river, newer subdivisions, and businesses serving Naval Air Station Whiting Field means storm claims here range from roof and wind damage to flooded first floors and business interruption.
