About Corolla, NC
Corolla, North Carolina is an unincorporated community located in Currituck County along the northern end of the Outer Banks. Once a quiet coastal settlement, Corolla experienced significant growth during the 1980s and has since become one of the most popular vacation destinations on North Carolina’s coast. Situated between the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, the community is known for its wide beaches, natural beauty, and relaxed atmosphere. Corolla officially received its name when a post office was established in 1895, with the name derived from the botanical term for the petals of a flower.
Today, Corolla is best known for attractions such as the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the historic Whalehead Club, and the famous wild Banker horses that roam the northern beaches. These horses are believed to be descendants of Spanish mustangs brought to the region centuries ago. Visitors also enjoy water sports, wildlife viewing, and exploring nearby conservation areas, making Corolla a unique destination that combines coastal recreation, history, and natural preservation.
